Dengue Cases Continue Across the Americas as Single-Dose Vaccine Data Show Promise

Dengue remains one of the world’s most important mosquito-borne viral diseases. PAHO reported 745,736 suspected dengue cases in the Americas by epidemiological week 14 of 2026. Dengue is spread by infected mosquitoes and can cause fever, severe body aches, rash, and in some cases severe bleeding, shock, or organ complications.

There is no specific medicine that cures dengue; treatment focuses on early recognition, hydration, and medical care for warning signs. Vaccine research is progressing: Brazil’s single-dose Butantan-DV dengue vaccine showed about 65% efficacy against symptomatic dengue and 80.5% protection against severe disease or hospitalization-related outcomes over five years in Phase 3 follow-up.
