Marburg Outbreak in Ethiopia Ends, While Vaccine Research Advances

Ethiopia declared the end of its first Marburg virus disease outbreak on January 26, 2026, after two incubation periods passed without a new confirmed case. WHO reported 19 total cases, including 14 confirmed and 5 probable cases, with multiple deaths.

Marburg virus disease is a severe viral hemorrhagic fever related to Ebola. There are currently no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments, although early supportive care improves survival.
