Norovirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Shows Why the “Stomach Bug” Spreads So Fast

CDC reported a gastrointestinal illness outbreak on the Caribbean Princess cruise ship in May 2026. The outbreak affected passengers and crew and was associated with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, consistent with norovirus-like illness.

Norovirus is highly contagious and spreads through contaminated food, water, surfaces, or close contact with infected people. Cruise ships, schools, nursing homes, and hospitals are common outbreak settings because people share dining areas, bathrooms, rooms, and surfaces. CDC notes that people should wash hands carefully, avoid preparing food while sick, and wait at least 48 hours after symptoms stop before handling food or caring for others.

No approved norovirus vaccine or antiviral treatment is currently available, but Moderna’s investigational mRNA-1403 vaccine is being studied in clinical trials.
